Nestled amidst the hills to the north of the provincial capital, Fara stands as a renowned hub of viticulture, founded during the Early Medieval period. Its name, of Lombard origin, stems from the word ‘fara,’ linked to the Germanic term ‘faran,’ meaning ‘to travel’ or ‘to move by means of transportation.’ The town is documented in Latin sources as early as 569 and later in the Edict of Rothari. Initially signifying a ‘military expedition,’ it later evolved to denote a ‘military settlement.’ Often, the concept of ‘fara’ coincided with a kinship group encompassing all descendants from common progenitors.

The ‘fara’ (plural: ‘fare’ in Italian, ‘farae’ in Latin) represented the fundamental unit of social and military organization among the Lombards. It comprised an aggregation of homogeneous families, descending from the same agnatic clan, capable of organizing into contingents with military functions such as exploration, attack, and territorial occupation during the great migration that brought the Lombard people from the Baltic region, through Pannonia, and into Italy.
